Eruption of Mt Anak Krakatau is strombolian type: PVMBG

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Acting Head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Antonius Ratdomopurbo said the eruption of Gunung Anak Krakatau was of a strombolian type. Therefore, the potential of Gunung Anak Krakatau causes a tsunami that is quite small.

"Mount Anak Krakatau is of strombolian type that emits flames instead of large hot clouds," said the man who was greeted by Purbo when met by Antara in Jakarta on Friday.

The recent eruption on Mount Anak Krakatu is a phreatic eruption, where eruptions occur due to magma tapping water. On Friday, January 4, Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait erupted on Friday at 14.21 WIB, causing a column of ash with a height of approximately 2,000 meters above the peak or about 2,110 meters above sea level, according to PVMBG.

The ash column of Anak Krakatau points north and northeast. The ash column is observed to be white to gray with thick intensity. Eruptions recorded on seismograms with a maximum amplitude of 14 millimeters and duration of approximately three minutes and seven seconds.

The sound of the banging eruption was also heard at the Anak Krakatau PVMBG Volcano Observation Post.

Mount Anak Krakatau on Friday morning at 09.39 WIB erupted and issued a column of white to gray ash with a height of ± 1,500 m above the peak. During Thursday, the mountain also erupted 37 times, throwing incandescent lava, volcanic ash and sand.

Currently, Gunung Anak Krakatau is at Level III (Alert) status with recommendations that the public or tourists are not allowed to approach the crater within a radius of 5 km from the crater.
