REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the House of Representatives, Rofi Munawar, has urged Australia to reconsider the decision to recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He reiterated that the decision is not right.

"Obviously, it is detrimental to the future of Palestine and would disturb Australia's relations with its strategic partners, including Indonesia," Munawar stated, after chairing the Asia-Pacific Regional Session at the Conference of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds in Istanbul, Turkey, on Dec 14 and 15, according to a statement received here on Monday.

Munawar, who is a politician from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), called on Australia to review the decision, as recognizing West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would be a careless and negative step for the future of Palestinian-Israeli peace, he noted.

"Although Australia has promised not to move its embassy to West Jerusalem until there is a final status, they have forgotten that the recognition would make the final status of determination process more difficult," he stressed on the sidelines of the conference attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyep Erdogan and more than 500 members of parliament from different countries.

Munawar reminded other countries not to follow the steps taken by the United States and Australia. He said that US policy under Trump is proven to often spark international uproar.

"The world, including Australia, should be aware of Trump's leadership style, which is often careless and destructive," he stressed.

He remarked that today the international community no longer sees the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as an Arab and Islamic issue. At the event, the House of Representatives delegations called on the parliamentarians worldwide to see the issue as a humanitarian problem and an injustice.

"We all agree with that standpoint," Munawar pointed out.
