MUI strongly condemns tawheed flag burning incident

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA —  Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) commented on the incident of a flag bearing tawheed (Laa Ilaha Ilallah, the oneness of God) sentence that was burned in Garut, West Java on Monday (Oct 22). The organization strongly condemned the people behind the case.

“MUI and Muslims strongly condemned the incident of tawheed flag that was burned. We ask the law enforcement authorities immediately arrest the perpetrators in accordance with applicable law,” said MUI chairman KH Muhyiddin Junaidi on Monday (Oct 22).

He also asked law enforcement can be carried out fairly. Thus, social stability, security, and peace in the community can be maintained properly.

Muhyiddin said the incident of tawheed flag that was burned reflects immoral behaviour. The perpetrators have shown a foolishness, which actually damage the image of all Muslims in this country.

“The maturity of Muslims and the Indonesian nation is undergoing trials. To all parties to hold back and put forward the law, and avoid the use of violence,” Muhyiddin continued. 

However, Muhyiddin said public attention should not be diminish in other cases, that were not less big. Such as corruption, collusion, and nepotism.

Meanwhile, leader of Az Zikra Dhikr Council KH Muhammad Arifin Ilham believed perpetrators who burned tawheed flag did not represent Banser. He called on the people to be patient.

"Alhamdulillah, (thank God), last night three members of Banser have been arrested and others involved in the incident to be arrested soon. We should be wary of provocation to divide us," he said in his Facebook account on Tuesday (Oct 23).

The incident of a flag bearing tawheed sentence burning by Banser members reaped condemnation from societies. They strongly condemned the case that started by the spread of videos that record tawheed flag that was burned the perpetrators who considered the flag as representation of former Islamic mass organization Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), which has been disbanded by the government.
