REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Amnesty International Indonesia (AII) has asked the Indonesian government to abolished the death sentence in the country. AII Executive Director Usman Hamid said the government must be proactive in the lifting of the capital punishment.

"It has to follows Malaysia where such an initiative comes from the Malaysian government," Hamid said in Jakarta on Friday.

He said Malaysia has abolished its death penalty for all crimes.

"In contrast, in Malaysia such an initiative came from the government, but in Indonesia it could be the other way round," he said.

Hamid added that in Indonesia, it is the House of Representatives (DPR) which initiated the elimination of the capital punishment. Member of Commission I of the DPR Charles Honoris encouraged the government to follow the steps taken by the Malaysian government.

"As a member of Commission I in charge of international relations, Charles has the capacity to formalize his views and make them a political initiative in the House of Representatives," Hamid said.
