Sweetened condensed milk is not a substitute for breast milk

Ads with wrong perception about sweetened condensed milk have been withdrawn.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) said sweetened condensed milk product is not a substitute for breast milk. Recently, people was shocked with the misunderstanding about that product consumption.

“Sweetened condensed milk is not a dairy product that can be used as fulfillment of nutritional intake, especially for infants, just like breast milk,” said BPOM head Penny Lukito on Monday (9/7).

According to Penny, sweetened condensed milk is merely a milk-containing product to complement the serving. She said in some cases, people misunderstanding about the product, where many of them considered it as purely product that fulfils milk intake.

Nevertheless, Penny said sweetened condensed milk is not a dangerous product to consume by people. However, sweetened condensed milk should simply be used as product to complement the food dish, not to fulfill the nutritional needs.

“Sweetened condensed milk is not dangerous but we found a number of ads that give different perception about this product,” Penny added.

Penny said there are advertisements and labels that said sweetened condensed milk contains enough milk for nutritional adequacy needs. She said it was wrong perception that shown by some business actors.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Food Beverage Entrepreneurs Association (GAPPMI) chairman Adhi S Lukman appreciated BPOM's efforts to supervise the product. He admitted the ads with wrong perception about sweetened condensed milk have been withdrawn from circulation.

“We have agreed to withdraw the ads, it has become a producer decision," he said.
