Operation to halt imported food smuggling to be intensified

Ministry to impose sanctions to company involved in smuggling of food.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, Ministry of Trade along with National Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) intensify the eradication of smuggling attempt of imported food to Indonesia. The ministry said it would impose sanctions on companies involved in  smuggling of food.

Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita appreciated and fully supported National Police step to combat the smuggling of imported food. Criminal prosecution should be completed throughly.

“We will continue to coordinate with National Police and if we found smuggling, we’ll make sure to report it directly,” said Enggartiasto.

Enggartiasto said Ministry of Trade has given administrative sanction to companies involved in  smuggling of food to Indonesia. In fact, the administrative sanction was given in the form of two-year import ban and revocation of permit, as well as a suspension of the license and Producer Producer Importer's Identification Number Import Identification Number (API-P).

According to Enggartiasto, Ministry of Trade has a procedure to impose sanction on individuals, such as management or owners of companies involved in smuggling imported food. Through the sanction, the management and owners of company can not re-apply permits using other companies.

“If found by Bareskrim, we make sure first import permits will be revoked, then the API-P, even sanction to individuals,” Enggartiasto added.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Trade Director General of Consumer Protection and Commerce Veri Anngriono Sutiarto said the other threats to naughty importers. Not only administration sanction, but also criminal sanction related to consumer protection.
