REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The East Java branch of the influential Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said the impact of the series of terror attacks on economy in Surabaya, the East Java capital, would not last long. General Chairman of the East Java Kadin La Nyalla Mahmud Mattalitti said the attacks on three Christian churches in the city on Sunday would cause only minor setback on the economy of the region.
"Business people in East Java would not be too worried by the impact. They were only a bit shocked," La Nyalla said in press release issued here on Tuesday.
The suicide bomb attacks on the three churches that left 18 people dead including 6 bombers followed a bloody riot by hundreds of terrorist suspects breaking detention cells at the head quarter of police mobile brigade in Depok, near Jakarta last week. Five police officers and a terrorist suspect were killed in the riot.
La Nyalla said in general the incidents would have no serious effect on the East Java economy, adding the economy is to grow as expected.
The hardest hit would be the retail sector but only temporarily as many people chose to stay away from by public places such as shopping centers.
"But this would not last long. The economy would be normal again especially as people of East Java are known for their courage and bravery. They would not be traumatized," he said.
The East Java Kadin would work together with the government as usual to boost the regional economic growth, he said.
Earlier, leaders of the East Java Kadin already held a meeting stressing the importance of cooperation with the provincial administration to improve the province's economic performance.
Deputy general chairman of East Java Kadin Dedy Suhajadi said the business leaders agreed at the meeting to support whoever emerges as the winner in the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in the country's second largest province.
"East Java Kadin remains consistent in encouraging the business leaders grouped in the provincial Kadin to be more professional in their relations with the government authorities," he said.
