REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Baseball and Softball Association will select the core team that would participate in the 2018 Asian Games from May 1 to 5 in a trial championship. The trial to be held at the baseball field of Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex Senayan, Jakarta.

We will select 24 athletes out of 80 athletes from national players as well as U-18 players, and we will divide them into four teams in a later trial," Agas Leo Cahyono, Vice Chairman of the Association, stated during a press conference here on Monday.

He noted that the test match at the Gelora Bung Karno baseball field (GBK) Jakarta will be watched by the Asian Baseball Federation's supervisor in an effort to get field certification.

"We used a half-competition system and went straight to the finals on Jan 5. The players have followed the national training since January and are now in the second stage of selection," he remarked.

The association, he continued, has also established cooperation with Japan Baseball Federation for training coaches in May.

"The athletes who are included in the core team will follow the Asian East Division Championships in Hong Kong on June 28," he added.

The Indonesian team will be included in the A game of Asian Games baseball game with Japan, China, and Hong Kong. The pool B will be filled by Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines, and Pakistan, he noted.

"Until now, Indonesia is still ranked ninth in Asia, and we are trying to win the title in Hong Kong, in order to move up to the fifth place in Asia, so that we can remain in pool A during Asian Games," he revealed.

The Asian Games baseball game will be held at the GBK Senayan baseball field and the baseball field in Rawamangun, East Jakarta.
