REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Police is currently investigating third-party applications on Facebook that have allegedly violated the data privacy of users, an official stated here on Thursday. The police have suspected that some third-party companies have misused the personal information of Facebook users, who are mainly from Indonesia.

"We are seeking to understand the internal functioning of Facebook, including third-party linked apps offering trivia and quizzes to users, and why such platforms are able to lure people into submitting their personal information," Commissioner General Pol. Ari Dono Sukmanto, chief of the National Polices Criminal Investigation Department, noted in Jakarta.

Due to the leak, personal information of users is later inappropriately used by other parties (for some commercial interests), Dono remarked.

The police have yet to provide details on the investigation, as it is still underway. However, he has yet to receive any reports of data misuse on Facebook in Indonesia.

On a separate occasion, Ruben Hattari, head of public policy Facebook Indonesia, was questioned for five hours by the police, Wednesday (April 18), over allegation of misuse of data.

Hattari remarked that the California-based social network company is currently conducting a full audit of the system.

He pointed out that Facebook Indonesia is committed to disclosing the reports once the audit is completed. The final audit reports will be delivered to the National Police's Cyber Crime Division, Information and Communication Ministry, and House of Representatives, Hattari stated.

However, the Facebook representative could not as yet determine the date of completion of the reports.

Following the data leak scandal on Facebook that has been ongoing since last year, the police suspect that some one million users in Indonesia have been affected.

Facebook users worldwide currently reach some 2.07 billion, of which some 115 million are from Indonesia.
