REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto said that the fourth industrial revolution (industry 4.0) will provide new job opportunities. The revolution will not reduce employment, he believed.
"The industry can increase the existence and expansion of work fields that will require new workers," Hartarto stated, after a coordination meeting on the implementation of industry 4.0 in Jakarta, on Thursday.
Hartarto explained that the 4.0 industrial revolution requires individuals to manage change and create opportunities, so that they would not be left behind by competitors at the global level. Through these changes, and in order not to reduce the workforce, workers must improve the skills and quality of education to strengthen competitiveness.
On the same occasion, Minister of Communications and Informatics Rudiantara expressed belief that industry 4.0 will not reduce the workforce with the development of technology.
Rudiantara added that the occurrence of this 4.0 industrial revolution would create new jobs, because workers must improve their ability to adapt. "This process will give birth to the need for new skills, and so Indonesians do not have to worry as they can increase their skill set with training and vocation," he remarked.
He noted that technological finance companies that are engaged in the sale and purchase and return of goods still require labor to supervise the process of delivery of goods. "Shopee, for example, has to add 1.5 thousand new employees to the customer service, because the returns must be checked and the robot is unable to do it," Rudiantara explained.
