REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) asked for young bureaucrats, who are also candidates for civil government employees, to maintain their sense of high curiousity. He wanted civil servants to never stop learning.

"I would like to remind everyone to remain eager to learn new things. It is important for the young generation to maintain curiousity," he said in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The President made the statement in a public seminar for candidates of civil government employees that had passed the 2017 selection tests. The seminar was themed 'Uniting in Harmony towards a World Class Bureaucracy 2024'.

During the lecture, the President kept referring to curiousity as 'Kepo', which is an abbreviation for 'Knowing Every Particular Object' and is a popular term, especially among the younger generation, to describe an individual who is always curious about every subject matter.

"Once again, you have to be 'Kepo' (curious), always eager to learn and explore. Do not get stuck in a routine and become monotone. Stay updated in developments of science and technology, on innovation and the dynamics of era. Explore the people's aspirations," he said.

There were a total of 5,165 candidates participating in the public seminar, representing 33,155 candidates who made it through the regular selection process back in 2017.

"As chosen members of the public, you should be reminded that you were selected out of 2.4 million people who registered, but there were only 34,000 of you who made it through, as a civil member of the public who had been chosen, you have a big social responsibility, to abide by the law and social orders. Responsibilities in maintaining ethics and politeness," he added.

Furthermore, he also asked the participants to be defenders of Indonesia's Five Principles or the Pancasila.

"You have all become special figures for the nation as you have been chosen, which is why I asked for all of you to be the symbol of unity for the country, a defender of the Pancasila who actively implement its principles, as bureaucrats that are full of integrity and free from corruption. Bureaucrats who serve the people and bring a leap of growth to the country," he reiterated.

Also present were ministers of the Working Cabinet, among others, Minister of Agriculture and Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H Laoly, Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education M Nasir.
