Jokowi comments on home confinement for Abu Bakar Ba'asyir

The application of cleric Ba'asyir' home confinement has not been received by Jokowi.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has not received the application from ustaz Abu Bakar Ba'asyir's family to consider home confinement for the convicted terrorist aged 80. Therefore, he refused to comment on the issue.

"The letter has not been received, so I can't say anything yet," Jokowi said after performing Friday prayers at Istiqlal mosque, Jakarta, on Friday (March 2).

The request upon clemency also has not been in the president's hand. "About the clemency, I also have not receive the letter," he added.

On Thursday (March 1), ustaz Abdul Rochim Ba'asyir conveyed his hope related to his father condition. He wished cleric Ba'asyir to be allowed to return to Solo, Central Java for medical treatment. The application has been sent to Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu during the minister's visit to al Mukmin boarding school, Ngruki, a couple days ago.

Ustaz Rochim said the family would also consider to send a direct application to Jokowi. He said his father condition has been worsening since last year. He had swollen legs due to chronic venous insufficiency, suffered a cardiovascular disease and had gastric pains. 

Ustaz Ba'asyir was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital, Jakarta for medical examination on Thursday. According to ustaz Rochim, it took five months for his father to get examined in the hospital.

Earlier, Jokowi has allowed ustaz Ba'asyir transfer from prison to hospital. He acknowledged the cleric's condition. "It's from the humanitarian side. I think it can be accepted by everyone. Of course, we care to bring him to the hospital and be cured," the president said on Thursday (March 1).

South Jakarta District Court judge sentenced cleric Ba'asyir to 15 years in prison in 2011. The Assembly assessed Ba'asyir proved to create an atmosphere of terror with holding military training at Bukit Jalin Jantho, Aceh.

The Assembly also assessed Ba'asyir proved to plan military training with Dulmatin. They discussed the plan near Al Mukmin Ngruki Boarding School in Solo, Central Java, in February 2009. Ba'asyir jailed in solitary confinement at Mount Sindur prison, Bogor to live the remain of the sentence.
