REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) would prioritize improvement of literacy or writing and reading skills level in the Government Work Plan (RKP) 2019. The decision is a continuation of the Bappenas' transformation of library services based on social inclusion.
"RKP 2019 makes literacy for welfare as one of the priority activities to support human development," said Secretary of Bappenas, Gellwynn Jusuf on Tuesday (Feb 27).
Gellwynn said that the social inclusion approach is intended to broaden community participation and increase community involvement in library service activities. In addition, Bappenas will also encourage the role of libraries as literacy movement institutions to take on the role of implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"After the transformation of library services based on social inclusion, then it needs to be encouraged library managers to push the target of SDGs," said Gellwyn.
Meanwhile, National Library (NLI) Director Syarif Bando appreciated the government's move to make literacy a national program to support social and economic development. According to him, it gives hope to people in areas that have difficulty in getting access to reading material.
"This policy will definitely have a major impact, especially if its planned with special allocations for districts and cities," Syarif said.
