REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA --  Indonesia has strongly condemned the United States' plan to move its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem in May this year, Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Monday. Addressing the country's disapproval to the US plan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs A.M. Fachir summoned US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta, here on Monday, the ministry tweeted on Monday.

During the meeting, Fachir reiterated that the US move has violated the UN resolution and will upset the peace process in Palestine based on the two-state solution.

Reuters reported on Friday (Feb 23) that the US has stated that it will open its embassy in Jerusalem in May, a move from Tel Aviv that reverses decades of the US policy.

US President Donald Trump announced last December that the United States has recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, infuriating even Washington's Arab allies and dismaying Palestinians, who want the eastern part of the city as their capital.

Following Trump's declaration, Indonesian President Joko Widodo condemned the US' unilateral decision and asked the US to reconsider the decision.

The Indonesian Government has once again emphasized its strong support towards the two-state solution and an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel.

"Any change in the status of Jerusalem will endanger the peace process and peace itself," Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi had stated.

"Israel-Palestine reconciliation is the key to unity in Palestine," Marsudi noted.
