REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Chairman of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Zainut Tauhid Sa'adi hoped the case involving preacher Sulaiman Rohimin would be a lesson to many people to be wise in using social media. The preacher on Tuesday (January 24) has met police's summons on the alleged hate speech case against a mass organization.

"In using social media, we need to know the norms and rules of laws that have been exist, so we could filter our posts," said Zainut on Wednesday (January 25).

MUI has issued fatwa related to law and guidelines to preach via social media. It can be used as guidelines for all Muslims. The fatwa mentioned every Muslim who preach through social media is prohibited to gossip, slander, and spread of hostility.

In addition, MUI also forbid bullying, hate speech, and animosity based on tribe, religion, race, or among groups. MUI expected the case that strangled preacher Sulaiman can be resolved wisely and by way of kinship. "So the problem will not cause negative excesses which can disturb the ukhuwah (fraternity) of fellow Muslims and Islamic mass organizations," Zainut added.

Jagakarsa Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) chief, preacher Sulaiman Rohimin came to South Jakarta Police on Wednesday to meet the summon and stated clarification. According to preacher Sulaiman, he did not create the offending meme. Nevertheless, he admitted to spread it to his internal group via Whatsapp.

Preacher Sulaiman said the meme about an Islamic mass organization was merely for his preach. He also assessed it became reminder from young caders of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). "We will work on the opportunity to have a mediation," he remarked.
