Ex-education minister Daoed Joesoef passes away

Joesoef introduced the Normalization of Campus Life/Student Coordination Board.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former education and culture minister Daoed Joesoef died on Tuesday at the age of 91. Joesoef's body was laid in state at his residence at Bangka VII Dalam Street No. 14, South Jakarta, and will be buried at the Giri Tama cemetery in Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday, his son-in-law, Bambang Pharmasetiawan, noted.

Joesoef had served as the education and culture minister from 1978 to 1983 under the era of the New Order government.

Born in Medan, North Sumatra, on August 8, 1926, Joesoef is survived by his wife, a daughter, and two grandchildren.

Joesoef graduated from the School of Economics of the University of Indonesia in Jakarta and pursued higher education at the Sorbonne University in France.

He was also known as one of the founders of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta.

When Joesoef was the education and culture minister, he was known for introducing the Normalization of Campus Life/Student Coordination Board, or NKK/BKK, aimed at cleaning the campus of political activities.
