REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Chairman of People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Hidayat Nur Wahid expressed his concerns to the existance of armed group in West Papua. According to him, the insurgents certainly dangerous and the case needed serious attention.

"We are concerned about separatism in West Papua. The armed group are getting braver and firmly oppose the Indonesian Military (TNI). The insurgents even declare to stand and consolidate internationally," Hidayat said on Friday (November 10).

Hidayat said the separatist group that known as Liberation of West Papua (OPM) became a challenge to Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Moreover, the victims are not only police personnel. At least 1,300 citizens were taken hostage by OPM.

However, he reminded NKRI must stay united at all costs. It was important to avoid provocation that makes divisions to the country.

"Don't let any region separates from Indonesia," he added.

Act of terror that committed claimed by members of OPM happened on last October. They were shootings at the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) station at Mile 66 in Tembagapura.

The incident occurred when Brimob personnel stationed in Timika were pursuing a group of armed assailants suspected to be behind security disturbances at PTFI's mining area. It caused seven Brimob members injured and one of them died. Also, three civilians became injured victims.
