REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said Indonesia was left behind in the development of infrastructure. Nevertheless, he said in recent years the government has been trying to catch up with speeding up construction of infrastructure projects.  

This statement was conveyed by President during the opening of Acceleration Certification of Construction Workers Simultaneously in All Areas of Indonesia in 2017 at Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, Thursday (October 19). 

Jokowi then asked the construction workers about infrastructure development in the country.

"We can compare our toll roads, railways, ports, and airports with other countries, which one is better?," Jokowi asked the audience.

Hearing that question, construction workers responded simultaneously that infrastructure development in Indonesia was better now.

"Yes, we are now continue to develop infrastructures because we must pursue our backwardness from other countries," Jokowi added.

He explained the cost of transportation in Indonesia was more expensive than neighboring countries, such as Singapore and Malaysia. Jokowi said it happened because of the infrastructure was not good yet.

The government also accelerated the development by working on dozens of projects in various regions. Jokowi said that in Borneo, the government is working on 24 projects, in Sulawesi as many as 27 projects, in Sumatra 61 projects, and in Maluku and Papua 13 projects.
