REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEMPAWAH -- Chief Executive of state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) II, Elvyn G. Masassya said work in the first phase of development of the Kijing seaport in the district of Mempawah, West Kalimantan, will start this year.

"In September this year, work is expected to start in the first phase of development of the port to be completed in 2019. Construction for the second phase is to follow in 2022," Elvyn said here on Friday.

He said the port would be designed as an international port complete with modern facilities and infrastructure such as container terminal.

"It will have a capacity of 2.5 million TEUS per year, but 1.5 million TEUS in the first phase," he said.

The port area will occupy a land plot of 200 hectares, but in long term the port area would be expanded to 5,000 hectares as it is planned to build an industrial estate, integrated with the port, he said.

A number of state and private companies have indicated interest in teaming up with Pelindo II to develop the ports and industrial estate, but the concrete form of the cooperation is yet to be discussed, he said.

He said the port is expected to contribute greatly to the economic development of West Kalimantan as the location is quite strategic facing East Asia.

"The port project is very potential especially West Kalimantan has a number of export commodities," he said.

West Kalimantan has large oil palm plantations and large bauxite mine and processing industry being developed.
