REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will honor the decision-making process on the General Elections Bill by the plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) that lasted until late at night on Thursday.

"We honor what has been decided upon (through a process) that lasted till late at night. Well, we honor it," he said after closing the 2nd national meeting of the United Development Party (PPP) here on Friday.

President Jokowi said Indonesia is a country based on laws, and so, any party that was unhappy with the decision could use a legal mechanism to fight it.

"This is a law-based, democratic country. Any party that was dissatisfied with the decision made by the House of Representatives (DPR) and wished to file a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court may just go ahead with it. The mechanism is there," he pointed out.

At a plenary session on Thursday, the DPR passed the General Elections Bill containing a presidential threshold, among others.

Under the threshold, a political party or parties may only nominate a presidential candidate if it or they can collect 20 percent of the total votes or 25 percent of the seats in the DPR.

Six political party factions supported the decision: the ruling Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle, Golkar Party, Nasdem, Hanura, PKB, and PPP.

Members of four other party factions -- Gerindra, Democrat, PAN, and PKS -- walked out of the meeting before the decision was taken by acclamation.

Following the decision, some quarters immediately stated they would seek a judicial review of the decision in the Constitutional Court.
