REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Agency for Combating Terrorism (BNPT) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) have agreed to tackle terror threats to various vital state assets.

"Terrorists can exploit several opportunities for targeting vital state assets, one of which belongs to the ESDM," BNPT Head Chief Commissioner General Police Suhardi Alius stated here on Tuesday evening.

In response to the issue, ESDM Minister Ignasius Jonan confirmed the statement of the BNPT.

"If terrorists were to target vital state assets, one of which belongs to the ministry, the direct distribution of oil and gas to the community would be affected," the minister stated.

Hence, the ESDM is cooperating with the BNPT to take precautions against major events.

Jonan witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between the ESDM and BNPT.

The agreement encompasses the areas of electricity, oil and gas, minerals and coal, and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation represented by the director general, respectively.

The scope of cooperation comprises safeguarding the operations, exchanging and guaranteeing the confidentiality of data and information, and monitoring and evaluating the implementation of securing the energy and mineral resources sector.

Alius had earlier stated that the fight against terrorism must be conducted in a comprehensive manner in order to achieve a major impact.

"If we combat terrorism individually, we will never succeed in tackling radicalism and terrorism," Alius noted during a workshop on tackling radicalism and terrorism here on Wednesday.

The BNPT has addressed the issue of dissemination of terrorist propaganda and the doctrine of violence on social media.

The BNPT has coordinated with a wide range of media outlets from 61 government agencies to unify perception in the face of such threats.

In addition, the agency has gathered about 600 netizens having several followers. They are bloggers, information technology experts, and visual communication design experts.

Along with the advancements in information technology, radical terrorist groups have changed the ways of recruitment, he noted.

"Radical terrorist groups no longer rely on the figure and face-to-face forum but rather on the influence spread through massive propaganda in cyberspace," he remarked.

"The main target of propaganda is young people," he stated.
