Boycotting Starbucks strengthens national identity: Observer

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Executive Director of Komunikonten Institute for Social Media and Diplomacy Hariqo Wibawa Satria said the call for boycotting Starbucks was necessary, not only for economical tendencies, but also to strengthen the national identity as a nation that acknowledge God and hold the value of Pancasila as state basis.

"Boycotting Starbucks is not aimed at impoverishing the owner, but to strengthen our identity to the international world,” said him to Republika.co.id on Friday (June 30).

However, said Hariqo, there were some things to be imitated from the American coffee outlets. It catched public interest as it has strategic and accessible locations. Starbucks also develop cool images to anyone going there, so the people always post their moment at Starbucks.

“We had different ideology to them. But we can imitate their strategy,” said Hariqo.

Starbucks boycott should also followed by a real action where the president, tourism minister, chairman of Indonesian council of ulema, and many other public figures came to local coffee outlets and uploaded it to social media.

Previously, Starbucks CEO Howard Mark Schultz conducted a meeting with Starbucks Schultz shareholders. He told them to resign if they did not support same sex marriage.

Starbucks Indonesia ensured to follow its' management principle to support LGBT. Marketing Communications and CSR Manager PT Sari Coffee Indonesia as the license holder of Starbucks Indonesia Yuti Resani said the company respected diversity and equality and committed to follow the Starbucks management's policies.
