REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's role (AIIB) was crucial in developing sustainable infrastructure and realizing inter-regional connectivity.

"AIIB is expected to build Asia and the world, in general, through sustainable infrastructure development," Sri Mulyani said here on Monday (June 19).

Sri Mulyani attended the second AIIB Annual Session on June 16 and 17, 2017, in Jeju, South Korea, under the theme "Sustainable Infrastructure."

She explained that sustainable infrastructure development needed adequate policies to streamline the use of funds.

"We need a variety of policy-based investment for realizing environmentally friendly development and attracting private sector. This year, we started collecting project fund preferences for infrastructure," she noted.

She believed that through such policies, sustainable infrastructure development will be realized and could provide benefits for the advancement of energy, environment, social, governance, and resources sectors.

Related to Indonesia's involvement in AIIB, Sri Mulyani confirmed that three Indonesian investment projects have obtained financing from the multilateral institution.

In the AIIB annual session, Indonesia delivered various directives, among others, enhancing cooperation with other multilateral institutions in infrastructure projects, especially the large-scale ones.

AIIB is also expected to finance projects without private assistance and support developing countries in project preparation through special funds.

During the 18 months of operation, AIIB, which was established in 2016, has recorded the realization of investment of up to 13 infrastructure projects in Asia and its surrounding region worth US$2.2 billion.

The third Annual Meeting of AIIB will take place in Mumbai, India, on June 25 and 26,
