REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi here, Thursday, welcomed special envoy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais to discuss efforts to reduce tensions and promote dialog over the Qatar crisis.
Owais is currently the UAE's minister of health. However, on the occasion, he was sent as the UAE's special envoy to convey several messages to Indonesia, Minister Marsudi remarked.
One of the messages was ways to promote dialog to resolve the conflict between Qatar and several Arab countries.
"He agreed that dialog and political resolution is the only option to resolve the crisis," Minister Marsudi stated in connection with UAE's stance.
Meanwhile, seeking a resolution through a military operation is not an option, she pointed out.
Minister Marsudi revealed that Indonesia is ready to contribute to resolving the Qatar crisis through dialog and negotiation, with the hope of preventing any escalation of tensions in the gulf.
"Why is Indonesia viewed as a place or country to receive these messages? It is because Indonesia is viewed as a nation having sound relations with all countries. It has a balanced position, and with its free and active foreign policy, Indonesia is seen as being an eager nation to contribute to creating world peace," Marsudi noted.
Minister Marsudi had communicated with her counterparts from several countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, Iran, and Germany, following several Arab countries' decision to sever diplomatic ties with Qatar.
Minister Marsudi and several of her counterparts agreed to promote dialog in resolving the Qatar diplomatic crisis.
Indonesia and several other countries have also voiced their support to the mediation process initiated by the Emir of Kuwait to resume diplomatic and commercial ties between Qatar and several of its Arab neighbors.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Bahrain had earlier cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorist groups and triggering the worst rift in years among some of the most powerful states in the Arab world.
The four states announced the closure of transportation ties with Qatar and gave Qatari visitors and residents two weeks to leave their countries.
Yemen, Libya's eastern-based government, and the Maldives have also joined in cutting ties with Qatar.
