REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Chairman of Advisory Board of Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) Din Syamsudin said Indonesia is a multicultural country. Tolerance and harmony was absolutely necessary to build this country.

Therefore, Din said there should not be a person or group intimidating others’ belief, in order to keep the harmony and tolerance. "Indonesian multicultural society, based on religions, ethnics and cultures, needs high level of tolerance and real harmony. Not the fake tolerance and harmony,” said him in a plenary meeting at MUI’s office on Wednesday (April 26).

He explained that real multicultural and harmony meant every element and every person should respect others and do not intervene others’ belief.  Din assumed there was a person or people who try to make a twist. They said hatred speech was an anti-unity act. He argued that this was not logical.

Din said any person who conducted hatred speech should be processed under the law. He deplored the case of alleged blasphemy by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok which took a long time and energy suddenly became a joke during the trial. He said there was a tendency to release him.

“We think it was a cheap game. Therefore MUI’s advisory board in its nationality preaching said never underestimate blasphemy case,” he said.

He added that playing with the law was very dangerous as it could result national disunity. Din insisted for not intervencing the law. But, he assumed that it was clear that there was an indication to play with the law.

He said MUI’s advisory board could only leave messages and agreement that anybody should not play with the law. “I cannot imagine the impacts when this is happened,” he said.
