REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Trade, and the United States government, represented by the US Embassy in Jakarta, discussed the process of implementing effective regulations to accommodate business interests and achieve the government's vision.

Director General of International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Iman Pambagyo stated, here on Wednesday that the discussion was an attempt to draw up regulations that would benefit the national economy. "Through the discussion, we want to understand how to establish good regulations with best practices of the international community that not only accommodates business interests but also the government's vision," Iman noted.

He added that government intervention through regulation or policy is needed, because the current market is not perfect. "However, the intervention cannot be overestimated, as it will cause various problems in the business world," Iman noted. "We want to learn from the United States on how to develop a policy. We cannot make a rule based on delusions that would be inefficient and ineffective," Iman remarked.

On the occasion, Deputy Ambassador of the United States Embassy in Jakarta Brian McFeeters noted that the US, as the only party, would give a view, while the final policy determination will be returned to the Indonesian government. He added that the regulations made by the government should involve stakeholders. "We develop effective policy standards. Later, Indonesia would take decisions in determining policy by itself," McFeeters revealed.
