Saman dance captivates spectators at Roman colosseum

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, ROME -- A group of nine Indonesian child artists who performed the Acehnese dance of Saman enthralled spectators visiting the Roman Colosseum, one of the tourism attractions in Rome.

After performing Saman dance in Rome, the entourage, led by Ida Riyanti, will continue its journey to Agrigento, Sicilia, to participate in the 17th International Children Culture Festival "I Bambini Del Mondo," a task executor of Information, Social and Culture Affairs of the Indonesian Embassy to Russia Aisha Allamanda on Sunday.

Saman dance was showcased mainly as a street performance in front of the Colosseum on Thursday afternoon local time. The group of dancers comprised nine Indonesian children aged between eight and 12 years from the Kinnari dance studio in Jakarta.

Several tourists expressed admiration after watching the dynamism of the dance. The uniqueness of the dance and colorful costumes of the Indonesian troupe raised the spectators' enthusiasm to click pictures with them.

Anderson and Mariana, a Brazilian couple, praised the efforts to promote the diversity of Indonesian culture through unconventional means, including by showcasing a traditional dance as a street performance. Meanwhile, eight-year-old girl Amaya, one of the dancers, expressed excitement to be able to perform in front of the distinctive icon of Rome.

The 17th International Children Culture Festival "I Bambini Del Mondo" is being held on Mar 4-9. During the festival, children from across the world will showcase cultural performances in various places, including by entertaining child patients in hospitals and the elderly in nursing homes.

The Indonesian artists will perform the Saman, Zapin, and Topeng Tiga dance forms. They will serve as Indonesian representatives to bring the mission of promoting Indonesian arts and culture to the world.

Riyanti stated that the participation of children in the cultural festival in Agrigento will be a meaningful experience to share the joy with other people through a cultural expression. The dance performances can offer an opportunity for the Indonesian Embassy in Russia to promote the beauty of Indonesian culture to the world.
