REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Supported by a yearlong, largest World War II naval battle exhibition, the Jakarta Maritime Museum in the old Sunda Kelapa harbor area in the Penjaringan administrative village is expected to attract 3.000 visitors monthly.

The museum, inaugurated inside the former Dutch East India Company's warehouses, focuses on the maritime history of Indonesia and the importance of the sea to the economy of present-day Indonesia.

"Usually the museum is visited by around 500 people per week and 2.000 per month, but with this great exhibition for a year, we are optimistic 3.000 people would visit the museum per month," Jakarta Maritime Museum Chief Husnison Nizar remarked after opening the exhibition on Monday night.

The museum is displaying models of fishing boats and other maritime exhibits from different parts of Indonesia and is also showcasing the celebrated Pinisi schooners of the Bugis people of South Sulawesi, which currently make up one of the last sea-going sailing fleets in the world.

Nizar said that visitor interest in the Maritime Museum continues to increase, and in 2016, the revenue earned from the sale of admission tickets had reached Rp500 million from the earlier set target of Rp 230 million. With the grand exhibition this year, he added that the total revenue generated from the sale of admission tickets is expected to reach Rp 700 million from more than 3.000 visitors per month.
