Landslide claims elderly person, closes road in Bali

Residents tried to find their belongings after landslide hit the Songan Village, Kintamani, Bali, on Friday (Feb 10).

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DENPASAR -- The Bangli Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency has recovered the body an elderly person who died after a landslide hit Kintamani Sub district of Bali Province.

According to the Head of Disaster Response and Emergency Division of Bali disaster agency, I Komang Kusumaedi, an elderly person named Siman (75) was found dead after landslide hit her house in Subaya Village on Saturday. The landslide occurred at 03.00 a.m.local time, as a result of heavy rain.

The joint team recovered the body, which was buried in the mud. Thus, the total number of victims who died due to the landslide in Kintamani reached 13, after the disaster claimed 12 people last Friday.

The landslide also shut the road connecting Denpasar and Singaraja in Gitgit Village of Sukasada Sub-district of Bali Province. The disaster occurred in seven areas of the access road.

Mud and rocks covered at least 100 meters of the national road in Gitgit. The landslide occurred on Saturday at 01.00 to 03.00 am after heavy rain since afternoon. "The road has been closed in Pancasari peak area to avoid traffic. 

Thus, the disaster didn't cause casualty or loss," the local resident Made Arya said. The Buleleng Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency deployed an excavator to assist people trapped by the landslide.
