President calls for people's active role in fight against terrorism

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo called on the people in the country here on Sunday to play an active role in the fight against terrorism with regard to narrowing room for the crime to happen. "Without the support of the whole people it would be difficult for us to fight terrorism. There must be no room even a small one for the terrorism to happen in our country," he said in a press statement received from the Presidential Secretariat's Bureau of Press, Media and Information.

President Joko Widodo made the call after attending an event to mark the anniversary of Prophet Mohammad at the office of the Ansor Youth Movement in Central Jakarta. He expressed appreciation to the police especially anti-terror squad Densus 88 for its success in uncovering a plot of terrorism activity on Saturday.

He called on all people to always be alert against similar threats in the future. "I appreciate the police, Densus 88, for their hard work in uncovering the plan before it was implemented. This also proved that the threat of terrorism is real and it is still going on in our country," he said.

President Joko Widodo said that terrorist attacks could happen anywhere and it would be the responsibility of the whole people to continuously fight the criminal activity. "Terrorists are indiscriminate. They have attacked mosques, churches, hotels, embassies, highways. Therefore, the government and the people as well as the police must continue fighting against them, he said.

The police have arrested four suspects and are still searching two others in connection with the discovery of a bomb in Bintarajaya, Bekasi, West Java, on Saturday, which is to be detonated at a vital national object. One of the suspects, a woman known as DNY by her initials, was arrested in her lodging house where the police confiscated a pressure cooker bomb that has high explosive power.
