70 aftershocks rock Aceh

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEUREUDU -- At least 70 aftershocks hit Aceh after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the westernmost Indonesian province on Dec 7. "Until Sunday night people have felt 70 aftershocks," Chief of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Office in Banda Aceh, Eridawati said on Sunday night.

The BMKG office recorded a total of 45 aftershocks on Dec 7, 14 aftershocks on Dec 8, seven aftershocks on Dec 9, and four aftershocks on Saturday and Sunday, she said.

Just on Saturday, an aftershock with a magnitude of 3.8 occurred at 03..51 a.m., an aftershock with a magnitude of 3.4 occurred at 06.04 a.m., and an aftershock with a magnitude of 3.3 occurred at 07.31 a.m., she said. An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale rattled Pidie Jaya district, Aceh province, on Dec 7.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 18 kilometers northeast of Pidie Jaya at a depth of 10 kilometers. At least 96 people were killed and 660 others were injured in the Dec 7 earthquake. The quake also damaged more than 12,000 houses.

The Pidie Jaya district government needs Rp901 billion in funds to rehabilitate houses damaged in the Dec 7 earthquake, chief of the local public works office Bahron Bakti said.
