REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- An Indonesian team from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in Surabaya, East Java wins the first prize at Chemeca 2016 organized by University of Adelaide, Australia.

The team named Spektronics-12 brought two prototypes cars of Spektronics 12 and 11, which two of them win two different categories at the chemical cars competition,

Team Manager Ryan Nurisal wrote on an email recieved by Antara here on Tuesday.

"Spektronics 12 wins the race competition that measures the speed of the cars with certain loads. Meanwhile, Spektronics-11 reaches the fourth position and wins the third place for poster category," Ryan said.

He explained Spektronics-12, which applied the reaction of hydrogen peroxide, has a degree of error of 0.1 cm in two races competed.

In the first race, Spektronics 12 managed a distance of 8.2 meters with a car load of 300 ml.

In the second race with a distance of 5 meters and a car load of 500 ml, Spektronics-12 had an error rate of 0.1 cm. Although it was a little off the mark, the car successfully defeated the other competitors whose average error rates of more than 4 cm.

"The results deliver Spektronics 12 as the first winner of race competition, ahead of his opponents from Malaysia, New Zealand, Poland, Iran and Australia," he said.

Meanwhile, Spektronics-11 is excellent in fuel using aluminum air battery that uses hydrogen peroxide stopping mechanism with a catalyst of iron (III) chloride.

"Its excellence is oxygen as the fuel, which is available in nature. The reaction is also considered to be very stable and has a high degree of accuracy," he said.

Spektronics ITS team has been participating in the chem-e-car competition since 2010.

In total, ITS has generated 12 chem-e-cars.

Chemeca is an annual competition for chemical engineering students which consists of designing and manufacturing chem-e-cars.

The main objective of the competition is developing chem-e-car using chemical reaction.
