Govt holds meeting to blocked gay apps

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo) awaits the result of panel discussion team about gay mobile applications.

The result of the discussion will be the basic for deciding the blocking of 18 gay apps that have been submitted by the Criminal Investigation Police (Bareskrim Polri).

"The decision will be announced no later than the end of this week," said Head of Public Relations Kemenkominfo, Noor Iza, on Wednesday (9/24).

Noor said all relevant institutions will be included in the squad panel to discuss the blocking of gay apps. Governement agencies, community organizations, and religious leaders will give their opinion. "Hopefully, all the aspects related to this issues will be throughly discussed," he said.

From the government side, the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Education were on the list.

While the organization to be invited are MUI, NU, and Muhammadiyah. Some religious leaders of Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism also invited to share their opinion

Meanwhile, Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa said her ministry has already held a coordination meeting with the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs to blocked gay application. The meeting was held on Friday (9/9). "The coordinating ministry also has the same commitment," Khofifah said to Republika.co.id, Wednesday (14/9).

According to her, it is difficult to eradicate the emergence of gay sites or applications in the cyberspace.

"If one site or application is closed, other application emerges two hours later. And it will continue to be like that," she said.

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Rudiantara has promised to follow up request from the police to block gay app. "We surely will block it to give a sense of security to the community," he said some time ago in the Presidential Palace Complex.
