REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the Indonesian Islamic Propagation Council (DDII), Mohamad Siddik said the riots in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra due to low of mutual respect in interfaith and ethnicities.
The riots expected because of the objections of an ethnic Chinese on the volume of the azan echoed at one of mosques.
"They do not respect local people who have azan tradition since decades ago," he told to Republika.co.id, Wednesday (3/8).
In a democratic society, Mohammad Siddik exposing society should support the proporsionalism principle. This principle means that the minority must respect the majority in worship. However, Mohammad Siddik regretted the unrest that led to the burning of the 10 temples.
He condemned any act of violence or things that are not in accordance with the law.
To authorities, Mohammad Siddik requested the investigation be conducted to determine the cause of the unrest. He also appealed to the public to keep restraint and not ignited by provocation in social media.
