REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR -- South Sulawesi recorded exports valued at US$491.92 million in the first six months of the year, down sharply 39.75 percent from the same period last year.

The provincial Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) described the performance was 'quite positive' amid the protracted global trade slump.

Head of the provincial BPS Nursam Salam said the exports were still dominated by nickel with exports destination, Japan, the United States and China.

Nickel is the main export commodity from South Sulawesi mainly to Japan, accounting for more than 50 percent of the province's exports of that commodity.

The province's exports in June rose from US$47.4 million in May, 2016, Nursam said here on Sunday.

The trade balance of the province began to rise especially as demand for nickel began to increase such as in Japan, Nursam said.

Japan is the main export destination accounting for 50.65 percent of the province's export value, followed by the United States, Malaysia and China.
