Judicial Commission: Supreme Court expected to be more responsive

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Judicial Commission (KY) said it hopes that the Supreme Court could be more responsive to the public about cases involving officials of the judiciary.

"After the case of the chairman of the Tembilahan district court in Riau, the Supreme Court should be more responsive to the public," KY spokesman Farid Wajdi said here on Wednesday.

Farid referred to Erstanto Windio Lelono and his deputy Mohammad Indarto , who signed a letter asking companies in that district for Idul Fitri holiday prize against a government regulation.

The government has even warned civil servants against accepting any prizes.

The Supreme Court has punished the two judges by not allowing them to handle any cases at court.

In addition they were moved to other area - Erstanto to Ambon, Maluku and Indarto to Kendari respectively in position at higher court to be easily controlled, Supreme court spokesman Suhadi said.

Farid lauded the firm action taken by the Supreme court saying the punishment on Erstanto and Indarto would serve as a lesson.

"It is good to protect the reputation of the judiciary," he said.

He said the Supreme Court must not be selective in meting out punishment for fraudulent court officials.

Farid's comments came after a number of district courts nabbed by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) lately on charge of graft.
