REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The Surabaya-based Airlanga University's Avian Influenza Research Center (AIRC Unair) in East Java is ready to help the police study the fake vaccines, uncovered in South Tangerang last Wednesday.

The AIRC was still seeking access to help the police in studying the type of bacteria used in the fake vaccines, AIRC Unair Chairman Prof Chairul Anwar Nidom remarked here Friday.

"We are ready if the police require assistance in terms of expertise for the future of Indonesian children, because the discovery of fake vaccines is of great concern and a serious problem for the nation," he affirmed.

This crime should be dealt with thoroughly because it can be categorized as an act of bio-terrorism, and such an act usually uses biological materials with the effect lasting for years, the AIRC Unair chairman stated.

"The act of bio-terrorism is more worrisome than the dangers of drugs, so the government must be committed in eradicating this crime. Let us save the children of Indonesia," he said.

The National Police Criminal Investigation Unit successfully raided a factory located in Pondok Aren, South Tangerang, where the fake vaccines against measles, polio, hepatitis B, tetanus, and BCG were being produced for many years.

Five persons suspected of manufacturing and distributing spurious vaccines for babies had been arrested, Director of Economic Crimes and Special Criminal Investigation Police Brigadier General Agung Setya stated in Jakarta, Friday.
