Jokowi’s message to Indonesian athletes at the Olympics

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo releases the Indonesian team that will follow the Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro 2016 at the courtyard of Merdeka Palace on Wednesday (22/6). Release of the event is done with red and white flag of the nation to the President of the Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi. Furthermore Nahrawi passes on the flag to the Olympic team leader, Raja Sapta Oktohari.

When giving a speech, the President ordered that the athletes show their fighting spirit to the world in this sport event. The President also reminded the Indonesian players to play fair.

"I hope the athletes can show the world that Indonesia is a nation of nations that is resilient, capable of competing with other nations, and a nation-minded winner," said Jokowi. He was accompanied by the Minister of Human Development and Puan Maharani Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahwari and Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee Erick Thohir.

Lastly, the President expressed his hope that the athletes can create an image of Indonesia as nation of sport. "From my homeland I look forward to the song of our anthem – Indonesia Raya that can reverberate loudly in Rio de Janeiro," he said.

Imam Nahrawi added, the 2016 Olympic Games will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 5 to August 22. Until now they are carrying only 25 Indonesian athletes who will compete in the world sporting stage.

“This is not counting the athletes who are struggling to qualify for the Olympics," said Imam.
