40 white tail starling released to the wild in Taman Safari

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- Ministry of Environment and Forestry together with Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI), Cisarua, released the 40 white tail starling from the program “Save Jaco” which began in 2015. A total of 115 birds were submitted by the community, which will be transferred to one of the five conservation centre at Taman Safari Indonesia.

Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, encouraged community involvement on wildlife conservation efforts of endangered animals.  "We have started this wildlife conservation effort by involving the community and we want to further push other conservation organizations to increase their efforts,” she said, Saturday (11/6).

Siti said efforts to release these birds in order to foster public awareness of wildlife conservation efforts, thus contributing to maintaining and preserving animals in nature. Efforts to involve local communities in wildlife conservation begin on the preservation of Bali starlings birds in 2005. The move was considered successful in restoring the population to 3,500 Bali Starlings in Indonesia.

"The conservation that previously initiated in 1980-1999 conducted by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) joint a team of 10 countries, was not so successful. Then later on began the preservation involving the public in 2005, this step was successful," said Tony Sumampau, Director of TSI, Cisarua.

Preservation of the white starlings also involve the local community of five villages in two districts within the circumference of the Safari Park premises.

 Representative of Indonesia Birds Foundation, Ria Sarianti added, preservation of white staling that was released in TSI is an evidence of successful community engagement and local government.

"The most important thing after this release is consistent oversight to support the increasing population in the wild," he said.
