REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government of Xinjiang, China, has issued a policy to ban for all religious activity against Uighur Muslims in the whole month of Ramadan. This prohibition included fasting for citizen who lived in the northwest region of Xinjiang, especially civil servants and students.
Responding to the issue, Chairman of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Jazuli Juwaini said the ban violated human rights. He urged President Joko Widodo to perform human rights diplomacy to ensure freedom of religious expression for Muslim Uighur.
"PKS faction requested Jokowi's Government to streamline human rights diplomacy to the Government of China, to persuade China to end human rights violations against Uighur Muslim," Jazuli said in an official statement received by Republika.co.id, Tuesday (7/6).
Jazuli is optimistic human rights diplomacy to be effective with positive results. Jokowi is known to have a close relationship with the Chinese Government.
Jokowi asked to assign the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, and the Minister of Religious Affairs, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, to implement the diplomacy of human rights to the Chinese government.
"The diplomacy is aimed to allow Uighurs to do fasting, because it has nothing to do with terrorism and separatism," Jazuli said.
Jazuli added, Indonesian active efforts was quite important not only because Indonesia represents as a predominantly Muslim country, but also because it has been a part of implementation of the mandate of Pancasila and the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution, as well as participation in the establishment of world order based on human rights principals.
