REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia promoted tolerance and peace at the 7th global forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Baku, Azerbaijan, on April 25-27, noted a foreign affairs ministry's press statement received here, Wednesday.

Indonesia believes that growing intolerance and discriminatory acts against fellow human beings, compounded by poor economic and social conditions, have triggered a rise in terrorism and extremism across several parts of the world, Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir stated at the UNAOC "Group of Friends High Level Meeting" forum.

Fachir reiterated Indonesia's stance on the importance of implementing hard and soft approach strategies to deal with Islamophobia, terrorism, extremism, and conflicts.

He emphasized the need to use a combination of law enforcement and effective handling of terrorism as a hard approach strategy and the implementation of policies in the socio-economic field as part of the soft approach strategy to deal with the spread of terrorism and extremism movements.

He also reiterated the country's commitment to intensifying international cooperation as a Constitutional mandate, which is to help preserve the world order.

Indonesia could serve as an example of how democracy, pluralism, and Islam can grow and progress in tandem, he emphasized.

In connection with this, the Indonesian government will continue to promote inter-religious dialog culture, tolerance, and cooperation through various bilateral, regional, and multilateral forums.

At the UNAOC forum, Fachir also emphasized the importance of digital platforms for spreading the values of tolerance and peace.

To this end, the Indonesian government has appealed to all world leaders to spread inclusive and peaceful values through social media as had been made by President Joko Widodo during his visit to the United States some time ago.

The UNAOC is an international forum aimed at building synergy between people from various religious and ethnic backgrounds to reduce inter-cultural tensions and to concurrently build understanding among communities.

The UNAOC's 7th Global Forum themed "Living Together in Inclusive Societies: A Challenge and A Goal" was attended by representatives from more than 143 countries.
