REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- The government of the West Java Provincial District of Sumedang has expressed its readiness to facilitate the implementation of five sporting disciplines in the upcoming National Sports Week (PON).
"We are ready to facilitate five sporting disciplines in the 19th PON," Sumedang Vice District Head Eka Setiawan stated here on Monday.
Competitors will face off in Sumedang District in five sporting disciplines: hang gliding, paragliding, golf, sepak takraw, and futsal.
During the sports week, apart from Sumedang, Bekasi District in West Java Province is also expected to host other sporting disciplines.
West Java, one of the 34 provinces in Indonesia, will hold the national sports week in September 2016.
Setiawan further remarked that preparations at the five venues had reached 89 percent.
"We are proud to be able to host the five sporting disciplines," he pointed out, adding that some athletes hailing from Sumedang District were also expected to deliver a good performance at the PON.
In the meantime, the government of Tangerang City in Banten Province, which shares its borders with West Java, had earlier evaluated the possibility of building a world-class sports center.
The sports center will likely be built in Alam Sutera or Palem Senia area, Tangerang, Mayor Arief R. Wismansyah stated here on Thursday (March 31).
"We are still evaluating whether it will be built in Alam Sutera or Palem Senia as we have land there. (By building the facility), we can host national and international sporting events," he noted.
So far, the city government has committed to promoting sports by building 32 futsal courts and 16 mini sports stadiums in 13 sub-districts, he remarked.
This initiative was aimed at fulfilling the need for supporting facilities for the local residents, he added.
