REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government has assured the international community on the occasion of the Nuclear Security Summit 2016 that the country has achieved what was expected of it regarding nuclear security.

A press release issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Monday stated that the Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla delivered a speech explaining Indonesia's achievements in the field of nuclear security since 2014.

Kalla noted that one of the achievements was the ratification of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism or ICSANT.

Additionally, the government also stated that Indonesia has released technical regulations on nuclear security and conducted cooperation as well as increased capacity building in the area of human resources required to ensure nuclear security.

Kalla was accompanied by Multilateral Director General of Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Hasan Kleib.

The Vice President said Indonesian government supports the efforts being made to enhance the architecture of nuclear global security.

Indonesia, says Kalla, believes the global community should prevent any terrorist group planning to lay its hands on nuclear weapons.

"We considered the efforts being made to secure nuclear and radioactive materials as well as related facility. It is important to prevent such materials from falling into the hands of terrorist groups and irresponsible parties," Kalla added.

The Vice President also condemned the terror attacks in Jakarta, Paris, Istanbul, Ankara, Brussels and Lahore.

Indonesia has been making more efforts to tackle the threat of terrorism and to invite countries to commit to such efforts as well as improve cooperation.

The Nuclear Security Summit 2016 is aimed to discuss achievements and developments regarding initiatives and joint commitment agreed to by leaders at the previous summit.

The summit was held in Washington DC from 31 March to 1 April 2016.

Participating countries at the summit had agreed to improve international cooperation and architecture of nuclear security by enhancing legal measures and ensuring a peaceful world by eliminating the threat of nuclear terrorism.
