REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- The Indonesian Water Police Directorate of Riau Province has foiled an attempt to smuggle illegal goods comprising 500 used clothing and 30 jackpot machines from Singapore, an official stated.
"The police officers confiscated some 500 sacks of used clothing and 30 units of jackpot machines during the course of the inspection," spokesperson of Riau Police Adjunct Police Commissioner Guntur Aryo Tejo remarked here on Friday.
Guntur noted that the inspection was conducted on Tuesday (March 29) after the officers suspected the Sinar Abadi motor boat of engaging in unusual activities.
According to Guntur, the ship was known to have set sail from Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands, to the Panjang Strait before continuing its voyage to Pekanbaru.
"The police officers intercepted the ship in Kuala Siak and conducted an impromptu inspection during which they found goods that were not listed in the manifest," Guntur revealed.
The unlisted goods in the manifest have been allegedly smuggled from Singapore, Guntur affirmed.
The Riau Province's Water Police is currently coordinating with the customs and excise officials of Dumai related to these findings.
"Currently, the vessel and its crew have been detained for further inspection," he stated.
The smugglers have allegedly violated the law on smuggling as stipulated in Article 102 of the letters A, Act No. 17 of 2006 on Customs in conjunction with Government Regulation No. 10 of 2012 on the treatment of Customs and Excise Taxation.
