REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The modes of transportation in Yogyakarta are less conducive to supporting the development of tourism, stated an observer of the Center for Transportation and Logistics Studies at the Gajah Mada University Lilik Wachid Budi Susilo.
"Only a few of them are able to reach the tourism attractions and offer connectivity to other sites," Susilo remarked here on Friday.
He pointed out that the Trans Jogja buses had failed to support the development of tourism as the route was only limited to the "ring road" due to which the tourists still had to rent vehicles if they wanted to visit more distant tourist attractions.
He said the Trans Jogja buses should not only serve as means of regular urban transportation but also as a mode of tourist transportation.
"There are several passengers at strategic locations, but if they want to use the Trans Jogja buses, they still have to walk a long distance to reach the bush shelter," he remarked.
According to Susilo, the modes of transport in Yogyakarta should contribute by complementing and reinforcing Yogyakarta as the city of culture, tourism, and education and not merely function as a public transportation system.
He suggested that various concerned stakeholders should reevaluate the available modes of transportation that can be availed to visit all the destinations spread across five districts in Yogyakarta.
"All modes of transport in Yogyakarta, with their current standards, should support the city of tourism," he emphasized.
In addition, he affirmed that the role of traditional means of transportation, such as horse carts and rickshaws, should also be optimized to support tourism.
"Rickshaws can be placed at certain locations, with the route adjusted to enable visitors to travel to the tourist attractions," he added.
