KPK arrests BUMN director on charge of bribing presecutors

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named a director of state-owned company PT Brantas Abipraya a suspect in a corruption case.

Sudi Wantoko, the finance director of PT Brantas was charged with bribing the prosecutor of the Jakarta High Prosecution office to stop investigation of a corruption case involving the state company being handled by the prosecution office.

"KPK arrested three persons in a 'caught red handed' operation on Thursday at a hotel in East Jakarta," chairman of the anti graft agency Agus Rahardjo said here on Friday.

The three persons were SWA (Sudi Wantoko) the finance director of PT Brantas Abipraya, DPA (Dandung Pamularno, a ) senior manager of the company, and MRD (Marudut), a businessman.

The three were accused of bribing the prosecutors of the Jakarta High Prosecution office to stop investigation of the corruption case involving the state company.

PT Brantas Abipraya is a state owned construction company mainly as contractor for water works projects.

"After the first 24-hour investigation KPK officially named the three suspects," Agus told reporters.

If found guilty the suspects are facing a punishment of up to 5 years in jail with a fine of up to Rp250 million each.

KPK also questioned head of the Jakarta High Prosecution office Sudung Situmorang and Special Crime Assistant at the high prosecution office Tomo Sitepu.

Initial investigation was already made of the two senior officials of the high prosecution office as witnesses, Agus said.

"I appreciate the success in the cooperation between KPK and the attorney general office to open wide the Pandora box," he said.

However, the status of Sudung and Tomo are not yet clear in the graft case.

Junior Attorney General Adi Toegarisman said the case is handled by KPK , therefore, the process of investigation would follow the procedure set by KPK.

"We follow the process . This succeeds thanks to cooperation between KPK and the Attorney General office. We would continue to coordinate in the investigations," Adi said.

Agus said as part of the process of investigations, a KPK team would raid the office of the Jakarta High Prosecution office and that of PT Brantas Abipraya.

"KPK would soon launch the raids. An order has been issued to carry out the raids soon," he said on Friday.

He said would ask attorney general's approval for the raid at the high prosecution office.

The corruption case of PT Brantas is being investigated by the Jakarta High Prosecution office.

KPK confiscated US$140,000 in the 'caught red handed' operation from the suspects.
