REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- Gayo coffee is expected to generate foreign exchange of up to Rp5 trillion per year, Central Aceh Regent H. Nasaruddin stated here on Sunday.
"This figure is four folds larger than our district budget, which is some Rp1.2 trillion," he pointed out.
The estimated foreign exchange generated from local coffee plantations is closely related to the issuance of Geographical Indication (IG) for Gayo Arabica coffee.
The establishment of the IG will have a positive impact on the importers who seek high-quality local coffee, thereby indirectly increasing the price of coffee beans.
The Gayo Arabica coffee has been imported by 17 countries in the world.
The United States is the largest export destination country for Gayo coffee produced in the Central Aceh District.
"Gradually, the export graph to the European Union and Asia-Pacific has also started to show a positive trend," Nasaruddin explained.
The district has 43.3 thousand hectares of coffee plantations, which produce more than 35 thousand tons of coffee beans per year.
