REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale jolted Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, on Thursday, at 7:10 a.m. local time, in an aftershock after powerful quakes that rocked the island on Wednesday evening.
The tremor's epicenter was located at 4.58 degrees southern Latitude and 94.56 degrees eastern Longitude, 598 km southwest of Mentawai Islands, and at a depth of 10 km below sea level.
Mentawai was hit by two powerful earthquake respectively measuring 8.3 on the Richter Scale on Wednesday at 7.49:41 p.m. local time, and 7.8 on the Richter Scale two seconds later.
"No casualties or damage to buildings were reported. West Sumatra BMKG has lifted its tsunami warning for 15 surrounding areas since 9:30 p.m," the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Wednesday evening.
