REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, RABAT -- A historical meeting on religious minorities in predominantly Muslim countries kicked off in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh on Monday, in presence of prominent scholars, experts, religious leaders, and government officials.
In the opening ceremony, Morocco's King Mohammed VI said that "interfaith cooperation is necessary, inevitable and urgent," calling for the adoption of a civilized code of behavior that bans all forms of coercion, fanaticism and arrogance.
He stressed the importance of moderate religious values in consolidating tolerance, love and cooperation in promoting righteousness and piety, and in helping people to rally together in order to enjoy a life free from war, greed, extremism and hatred.
He highlighted the leading role played by Morocco, which has always been an outstanding model of cultural coexistence and interaction between Islam and other religions, in interfaith dialogue.
This three-day meeting, which is held by Morocco's Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and the Forum for Peace Promotion in Muslim Societies, represents an opportunity to assert that violations of religious minorities' rights are totally at odds with the spirit of peace, moderation and togetherness that have always prevailed among various components of majority Muslim countries.
