REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Lawmaker Saleh Partaonan Daulay said the national Anti Narcotics Agency (BNN) could not alone fight the spread of illegal drug trade in the country.

Support is needed from other government agencies and community leaders, Saleh, chairman of the Commission III of the parliament said here on Monday.

"BNN could spearhead the fight against drug syndicates but it could not alone do the fighting," he said.

He said BNN and police have done much in the fight against the illicit trade but the perpetrators were even more outrageous lately and dare to openly face police.

Two police officers were killed here recently when launching a raid of a hideout of drug traffickers.

It was perhaps the first time that members of drug syndicate dare openly fight police, an observer said.

"This phenomenon showed that members of drug syndicates have outnumbered police officers in the country.

"If that is true Indonesia is now in serious problem," he added.

Meanwhile, report from Jambi police have arrested a drug ring leader Amril Runaldy (46)and a courier Aditya Pratama (38) who have long been on the police lift of wanted men.

Police picked up Aditya Pratama from his home in Kebun Bunga, in the city of Jambi last weekend, police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Kuswahyudi Tresnadi said.
